Educational Research

The educational research portion of AGEP STRIDES is designed to investigate factors that help or hinder individuals from racially and/or ethnically minoritized (REM) populations’ success in entering the STEM professoriate. The research questions are:

  • RQ1: What factors have the most impact on STEM faculty members’ recommendations when considering new faculty hires? How do these vary based on incumbent faculty members’ rank, discipline, personal demographics (race, ethnicity, gender identity, disability status, etc.), undergraduate institution type/classification, doctoral institution type/classification, current institution type/classification?
  • RQ2: What is the relationship between STEM faculty members’ personal and professional beliefs about diversity? Are there differences in personal and professional beliefs about diversity based on STEM faculty members’ rank, discipline, personal demographics (race, ethnicity, gender identity, disability status, etc.), undergraduate institution type/classification, doctoral institution.

This research is being led by Dr. Yvette E. Pearson at The University of Texas at Dallas under a subaward from Rice University and is supported by the Research Advisory Board. Research team members include Dr. Torrie Cropps (UT Dallas), Dr. Jue Wu (University of California Berkeley), Dr. Canek Phillips and Ms. Samara Boyle (Rice).
